Outside of choosing the right contractor:
The type of material used for a seawall is the single most important choice you can make.

As technology has changed, so have building materials. Certainly, each type of material has a
place where it is best used. But what makes for the best seawall?

At HayCo, we have experienced all types of seawall materials and design. Oftentimes, we find
ourselves repairing or replacing "existing" walls that were made using inferior materials and
outdated methods. We believe that while there are exceptions, vinyl sheetpiling is the single best
material for most residential seawalls.

Why NOT build a wall that has a long life, costs less, and looks great?

First of all, vinyl sheetpiling is not like the posterboard-thick vinyl siding on a house. Sheetpiling
is much thicker, heavier, and stronger. It has to be, in order to endure hundreds of thousands of
pounds of stress from our pile drivers. The size and type of sheetpile used varies by project;
obviously, a small residential wall doesn't have the same stress that a large industrial wall
undergoes. At the bottom of this page is a link to the largest manufacturer of vinyl sheetpiling.
There you can read more about it, and get the tech specs on strength and so forth.

Now that you have a better understanding of the product, here are the pros vs. cons.

PROS:

- Vinyl does not rot, split, crack, warp, or bow; it has a lifespan longer than the consumer.
It lasts longer than any other material available. Only vinyl gives a 50+ year warranty!
- Vinyl is easy to work with compared to some materials, making it cheaper.
- A selection of colors are available to match the environment or landscape.
- The vinyl seawall system
properly installed works!
- Vinyl sheetpiling eliminates dens from snakes and other creatures.
- Because sheetpiling is driven deep into the ground, it eliminates washout, under-erosion, and
sifting behind the wall.
- Vinyl sheetpiling can be installed in the water or out, no need to drain the water or wait for the
water level to go down.
- By design, the locks in the sheetpiling "breathe" so excess water pressure doesn't build up.
- Easily complimented. Boardwalks, patios, decks, boathouses, piers, and boat lifts are just a few
of the options that seamlessly mate to a vinyl seawall system.
- Vinyl is generally the most attractive option, especially for residential construction.
- Speed of installation. Vinyl sheetpiling goes in quick!

Cons:

- Vinyl is a byproduct of oil. If the price of oil goes up, so does vinyl.
